Senate Members

Staff Senate representatives consist of full-time or part-time staff who have been employed by UVa for a minimum of one year. Each term of membership is for three years, beginning in August and ending in August. Representatives may serve for two consecutive terms (a total of six consecutive years) and may be reappointed after a one year absence.

The number of representatives from each organizational unit will be proportionate to the number of total staff as determined by the University’s organizational unit chart. For units with 199 staff or less, 1 representative and 1 alternate shall serve. For units with more than 199 staff, 1 representative and 1 alternate will be added for every additional 200 represented.

Berkley Henshaw

Berkley is the Coordinator of Fitness and Instruction at the Department of Intramural Recreational Sports where directs the fitness programming for UVA students, faculty, and staff.   She is also responsible for collaborating with the Contemplative Science Center, Hoo’s Well and other departments to bring wellness and exercise into the workplace.  Berkley enjoys hiking, attending music venues of any type, spending time with her dogs, and finding ways to encourage others to live a healthy and active lifestyle.

Molly has been a Senior Internal Auditor at UVA for over seven years in the Internal Audit department. However, she began her journey at UVA in the Student Financial Services department in 2008. In her spare time, she enjoys hanging out with family and friends and helping to find forever homes for retired greyhounds.

Kendall Howell

Kendall Howell is the HR Generalist at the Department of Parking and Transportation; if he’s not sitting in on an interview, then he’s busy trying (and usually failing) to crack a key joke during a meeting.  He’s excited to join the Staff Senate because he’s a dyed-in-the-wool Wahoo who came up in the student governance culture of UVa, and sees a lot of that same sort of spirit present within the Senate.  Kendall’s passions include fantasy football, tabletop games of all sorts, and hanging out with his kids.

Norman works at the FM housing zone where he is a senior trades utilities worker. Basically, he keeps the dorms up and running so that our students can concentrate on learning. I work for UVAFinance in the Administrative Services Group where I am the Lead for Finance Events, Records Management and Retention; HR team member responsible for all on and off boarding of Finance staff; and I support the Office of Sponsored Programs.

In my leisure time, I am an Albemarle County Election Official, Assistant Chief-Woodbrook Precinct, President of River Run HOA, Youth Leader at City Church, Regional Marketing Concepts (RMC) staff for UVA soccer, lacrosse and basketball, and am an ardent educational advocate for the community at-large.  

Nicholas Williams


Nick joined the university in 2010, first as a student and then a graduate student in the Curry School whereas upon graduating in 2015, he now serves as a Customer Service Representative Tier II in Student Financial Services where he meets with students and advises them on their financial aid. In addition to working, Nick runs his own health & wellness business, extremely enjoys cooking, does spoken word poetry, and enjoys traveling, reading and spending time with friends and family.

Mary Cook is a User Experience Project Manager in Information Technology Services (ITS). In this role, Mary conducts usability tests to ensure the University community has the best possible experience with interfaces to ITS/UVA services and systems. Outside of work, Mary loves to camp with her family at the Virginia State Parks, read detective novels, and cook fast and easy meals.

Melissa Goldman

As the Fabrication Facilities Manager for the School of Architecture, Melissa oversees the toys of the shops from woodworking tools to CNC routers, robots, and 3D printers. She also teaches classes on design and experimental fabrication. Architecturally related, her alter-ego, Le Corbruiseier, officiates roller derby with the Charlottesville Derby Dames.

As Director of Financial Operations for the Weldon Cooper Center, Michael is responsible for ensuring that all of our units have up-to-date financial information for all of their operations while supporting the center’s policy compliance efforts.  He has both a B.A. in Economics and a M.B.A. from the University of Delaware and is a licensed C.P.A. in Virginia.  Michael is an avid sports fan and enjoys spending his time on the golf course and with his wife Jessica and son Matthew.

Leah Beard manages the School of Medicine’s Diversity Programs where she is a member of UVA’s Diversity Council, Diversity Consortium, Steering Committee on Women, and Health System Community Relations Steering Committee. Most of her free time, outside of work, is dedicated to watching her daughter and nieces play travel sports.

Jennifer Kirkham joined the University of Virginia in 2012 as Assistant to the Chair of the Department of Neurology.  In March 2017, she joined the new Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (THRIV) as Office Manager.   She received her Bachelor of Music degree from Trenton State College in New Jersey, and over the years she has enjoyed a variety of professional opportunities, including restaurant ownership.  Jennifer enjoys spending time with her family (near and far), baking sweet treats, and watching endless hours of college football.
