UVA staff have the opportunity to make a significant impact at UVA through the annual competition, “Hoos Making an Impact,” by submitting innovative ideas that will help streamline or improve a process at UVA. The competition is hosted by the Staff Senate in partnership with the President's Office to cultivate staff success across UVA Grounds in alignment with the University’s 2030 Strategic Plan.

Competition Timeline

  • Begin accepting submissions - October 1st, 2024

  • Submission window closes - October 25th at 5 PM

  • Submissions narrowed to Top 10 - December 2024

  • Winner(s) selected - February 2025

How Submissions Will be Evaluated

  • Innovativeness of the proposal
  • Connection to Key Initiative #5 of the UVA Strategic Plan (how the proposed idea cultivates staff success)
  • Clear, measurable outcomes
  • Simple and straightforward approach
  • Creative use of tools, techniques, processes, and systems
  • Potential for the project to be scaled across the University

How Ideas Will be Selected

Below lists the process of the three (3) rounds of judging.

First Round

All entries will be evaluated and fifty (50) finalists will be selected to go into the second round of judging.

This round will be judged by the Staff Senate Executive Committee.

Second Round

The top 50 entries will be reevaluated and narrowed down to the top ten (10) submissions.

This round will be judged by:

  • Designees from the following offices: President; Chief Operating Officer; Provost; and Vice President of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community Partnerships
  • Staff Senate Co-Chairs
  • Representatives from University wide units (i.e. Finance, IT, FM, etc.)

Final Round

Up to ten (10) finalists will present/defend their idea to the Screening Panel who will then meet to discuss each presentation/defense and select one (1) to three (3) winners.

This round will be judged by

  • Designees from the following offices: President; Chief Operating Officer; Provost; Vice President of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community Partnerships
  • Staff Senate Co-Chairs
