President Ryan announced today that UVA will be extending paid parental leave to ALL UVA employees. The new policy allows for 8 weeks of paid parental leave after the birth, adoption or foster care placement of a child. Read more.

Looking to reduce your commuting and parking costs? UVA vanpools are forming now from various locations including Richmond, Harrisonburg, Louisa County, and Nelson County.
A vanpool is essentially a larger more formalized carpool. Employee commuters decide the schedule and route of the vanpool. Vanpools typically operate Monday-Friday each week. Vanpool monthly fees include fuel, vehicle maintenance, parking, insurance, and roadside assistance.
Annual Spring Night Tour

The University’s Security and General Safety committee is seeking locations to visit on its annual Spring Night Tour on February 28. During the Night Tour, committee members walk areas of Grounds in darkness to assess safety conditions in various facilities of the University. The Committee particularly targets lighting, pathways, emergency phones, and physical infrastructure hazards. I hope you will feel free to share this invitation broadly with the Staff Senate members inviting them to survey their constituents. Please forward to me any suggestions for site visits by Wednesday, Feb. 22 so we can map out our itinerary.

Green Dot Program

UVA’s Green Dot program is a bystander intervention program that trains students, faculty, and staff in how to become active bystanders when they recognize a situation of sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking. Green Dot training specifically for faculty and staff will occur on Friday, January 27th from 1-4 in Newcomb 481. FLSA Overtime Rule Update

Following an injunction impacting updated FLSA regulations, the University has provided the following update:
A federal judge in Texas suspended the Department of Labor’s new federal overtime rule. The rule was scheduled to go into effect on December 1, 2016.
Until the timeline and impact of the final ruling is clear, the University of Virginia will respond as follows:
Pause the transition of exempt employees (including part-time) to non-exempt status until required;
Due to market and equity considerations, the pay increases that were approved, including the salary increases for all postdoctoral research associates, will proceed with original effective dates
The above actions were determined in collaboration with representatives across the University, are in alignment with our compensation philosophy and are consistent with the approach used by many peer institutions. Should you have questions, please contact the HR consultant for your school or unit.

Education Benefit Program Pilot in 2017

Through advocacy by the Staff Senate and incorporating staff feedback, the Education Benefit program has been revised. A pilot of the new program begins in January. Staff pursuing a degree or academic certificate will have access to more funds for tuition. We encourage staff to take advantage of this pilot program and share feedback with the Staff Senate via the Suggestion Box. For more information, see the Education Benefit pilot announcement email.

Town Hall Meeting: Inclusion and Diversity

The event on December 2 will run from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Newcomb Hall. This event will get students, faculty, staff, and administration together for discussions surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion (or lack thereof) in order to centralize our efforts to make change at UVA. We will be discussing various topics pertaining to inclusion and diversity.
